Rabbit Advocacy - Gumtree selling unweaned rabbits

One of our volunteers Priya has had some success in bringing about positive change for rabbits. Priya loves to work in rabbit advocacy as well as rescue. 

We have had a huge concern that Gumtree has been allowing unweaned rabbits to be sold or given away on their site. Priya approached them by phone and email putting forward the argument that taking baby rabbits away from their mother's milk and care before 8 weeks was a cruel practice.

The managers listened! Gumtree has now made it a rule that rabbits can't be traded under 8 weeks of age!

Keeping Rabbits in Queensland

While it is illegal to keep a pet rabbit in Queensland which is very well known now, there is still confusion amongst vets and the public about whether or not a veterinarian in Queensland can legally see and treat a pet rabbit if one is presented to their clinic. 

A Vet Can Treat a Pet Rabbit in Queensland

It is not a direct offence for a veterinarian to treat an illegally kept pet that is restricted matter such as a rabbit, as the owner of the pet has legal responsibility for the animal. The veterinarian may choose to advise the owner of the possible repercussions of illegally keeping a declared pest animal. Animals can be seized and destroyed under the Act and the owner may be prosecuted.
