The Rabbit Sanctuary welcomes Haku

Haku which means 'animal warrior' in Maori is settling in nicely at The Rabbit Sanctuary.  He was the beloved rabbit of Raelane who sadly passed away leaving Haku alone.  Raelane had loved Haku as a house rabbit.  She litter trained him, desexed and vaccinated him and spent her days with him.  He is very trusting of people and very affectionate.

Raelan'e daughter Tania was heartbroken to have to surrender him to The Rabbit Sanctuary but due to Queensland's harsh laws about which pets people are allowed to keep she had no choice.  The Queensland Government does not allow its citizens the right to own a rabbit, even Haku who was a link to her mother for Tania. 

Today Haku spent the day in an integration enclosure with two other gorgeous rabbit gals, Glenda and Violet who are vying for his attention!  His happy day came to a close and he was carried back to a comfortable lawn hutch and run for the night.  He will join them again tomorrow. 

The aim is to integrate Haku and Violet into the big rabbit run where the rabbits run free in a 60 meter run with little huts, plumbed water and lots to do.

Penrith Veterinary Hospital have had a rabbit handed in.  They are looking for a home for this pet rabbit urgently. 

He is a red-eyed white rabbit with black stripe down his back.

Pepper is doing well after her desexing op

Yesterday Pepper had her desexing operation at Riverbank Animal Hospital conducted by rabbit vet Dr Chris Gough in preparation for her journey to her new life in Sydney with Raj and Neha. 

She is in a cosy recovery capsule sitting on vet fleece with a water bottle and Barastoc Rabbit Pellets.  She is sitting still so that her wound will heal. 

Her capsule is positioned so that she can view the other rabbits in the near vicinity especially Noddy who came up from Sydney all by himself to adopt her and take back to his family in Hurstville. They fly out on Friday this week with Coates Pet Transport. 

Big Announcement! Noddy has chosen Pepper as his new adopted friend! They leave for Sydney by air on Friday!

Noddy and Pepper are great friends!  They both fly via Coates Pet Transport (thanks Michelle) from Grafton airport to Sydney on Friday.  Pepper is being adopted by Noddy and his family Raj and Neha of Hurstville in Sydney.

We welcomed Noddy to The Rabbit Sanctuary on Friday as we picked him up from his flight from Sydney.  Thank you to Michelle from Coates Pet Transport for arranging his travel.

Noddy is visiting to choose a new friend to take back to his apartment in Hurstville in Sydney.  Noddy's parents, Neha and Raj, were concerned that he was alone in the apartment during the day when they are working so they decided that they would adopt another rabbit friend for him.  Noddy is a desexed male rabbit and since he arrived has soaked up the attention shown to him by his fellow rabbits in the sanctuary.  See a photo of him as he disembarked from the plane in Grafton Airport which is just 20 minutes from The Rabbit Sanctuary.

Noddy is looking forward to being in the Australian Bush for a while, picking his own grass and meeting new friends.

During his stay at the Sanctuary, Noddy is booked in for nail clipping, a sudsy warm bath and a vet checkup.

He is wash in full sun to avoid a chill and towel dried in the sun.  Then he hops around on a sunny grassy spot in a hutch cage to further dry out.  Later he is finished off with a gentle relaxing blow dry.







 

Rabbit Found in Willoughby in Sydney's North Shore

Phone June: 02 9419 6617 to enquire about this big rabbit that has moved into June's backyard in Willoughby near Chatswood in North Sydney.  He is cream in colour with pale fawn markings and a pale fawn stripe down his back.

If you would like to adopt this rabbit.  June currently has him in a cocky cage which can't be his home for long.  She would love enquiry from people interested in taking him on a permanent or even a foster basis because she is not set up for keeping a rabbit.  She just saved him from the dangers of being free in her area where there are lots of feral cats and lots of dogs that would kill him if he were to hop into their backyard.

A question for The Rabbit Sanctuary!

Today we received an interesting question from Robert who is considering surrendering her rabbit to the Rabbit Sanctuary.  Here is the question and my answer:

Dear Kim
 What has driven you to create this sanctuary ? and what would a rabbits day look like in your care?

Kim's Answer:

Hi Robert,

Thank you for your questions.  I will try to answer...

My husband and I set up and run the sanctuary on our rural bush property.  We are in semi retirement and wanted to do something for rabbits because we love them and because there is so little help for them.  We began by helping one rabbit which led to two etc. and we saw this huge need for a sanctuary to help people like you who are desperate to find their rabbit a safe loving and comfortable environment when they can no longer care for them.  The reasons that people can no longer care for their rabbit are many and varied.

We have many long term or life long rabbit residents in the sanctuary.  Some people don't want their rabbits rehomed and so they live their lives in the sanctuary.

We have a very good rehoming rate too.  We only let rabbits go to new homes if they are very good homes with the right equipment and care plan.

Rehomed rabbits are always welcome back and we stress that to those that adopt them.  That way the rabbit is assured of ongoing care.

A rabbit's day in the sanctuary consists of:
Crack of dawn running and playing
Breakfast of pellets
Water change
Watching people put rocks into freshly dug or too deep rabbit holes
Morning tea treat of carrot or other treat such as 1/4 slice of bread each or a couple of salted peanuts or sultanas each etc.
Siesta
Afternoon tea of fresh hay
Evening top up of waters and pellets
Dusk running and playing on into the night if the moon is out!

All male rabbits are kept in lawn hutches until desexed at which time they go into the big rabbit run with females and desexed males.

New rabbits are in quarantine hutches on our back verandah until they are vaccinated and it takes effect.

Our local vet sees the sanctuary rabbits at no cost and is available 7 days a week and nights, so vet care is always available for sanctuary rabbits.

Promotional Rabbit Stand at Street Party Near The Rabbit Sanctuary

The Rabbit Sanctuary had a huge crowd at their promotional stand at the commercial street party held recently in South Grafton NSW which is near to The Rabbit Sanctuary.  We were able to talk to people about rabbit care and hand out our care sheets and contact details.  Many people commented that they had learned important information about rabbits from our volunteers on the day.


The crowds loved the bunnies.  Children patted the rabbits and learned about rabbit care.



Congratulations to Norman for helping a rabbit!

A Rabbit On The Hop!  Thank you Norman for saving him!

We would like to thank and congratulate Norman from Sydney for all the time and expense he has put in to helping a rabbit and providing a loving home.  Norman spent many weeks trying to catch a rabbit that kept visiting his backyard.  He sought advice from many sources including The Rabbit Sanctuary and Wendy Parsons from Bunny Business.  He purchased a magnificent walk in rabbit house, left out food enticements, tried lots of things but finally used an idea and method from Jim from The Rabbit Sanctuary of catching him with a light fishing net.  Norman eventually managed to catch him in his hands when the little bunny came up to him.

Finally that little bunny is safely in his new house away from roaming dogs and cats or the risk of being run over by a car.  Good on you Norman!  Keep in touch.

Weekend Wabbit Workathon at The Rabbit Sanctuary!

A big thank you to Brendan, Jackie and Solomon for the wonderful work they did at The Rabbit Sanctuary on the weekend!  Solomon was excellent on the mini tractor and Brendan on the shovel!  Jackie deserves thank you's from many many rabbits for the wonderful work she did at Casuarina saving many rabbits and educating the public about their plight in the park where people had been releasing domestic rabbits.

Emma adopted our rare Jersey Wooly rabbit having driven all the way from Macksville around 2.5 hours to pick him up.
She loves "Wooly" and she also brought her own Angora girl with her and dropped her to the Rabbit Rescue Sanctuary   vet in Grafton to have her desexed while she came out to the Sanctuary.

Emma left with Wooly and a voucher for a free vet check from our vet Dr Chris Gough. Wooly's adoption fee was $25 and he came with so much added value. It pays to adopt a rabbit rather than to buy one from a breeder or a pet shop.

Little girl goes home happily with her two adopted pet rabbits.  She adopted her favourites from the big Rabbit Run - a ginger and white boy and a grey boy.  Both are desexed males that have been vaccinated, wormed and mite treated.
He father built a great run with cosy rabbit house.
They will also have a wire playpen in the house so they can be part of daily family life.
These two special tame rabbits will be loved pets in Bangalow Northern NSW.

Fresh Water for your Rabbits and You too!

Rabbits need the freshest of water.

Not many people realise that rabbits also need to do more than likc water drops from a 'drinker'.

Drinkers are good for certain things e.g. in a carry cage where a bowl would spill and also take up a lot of space.

When in their normal day hutch etc the rabbit should be given a heavy ceramic bowl that he or she can't tip over and that can be used to dip the paws and wash the face and best of all LAP UP THE WATER:)

Water filters are recommended for your rabbit's water.  The quality of water in Australia is rapidly decreasing. Pollution, chemicals, old piping in the reservoirs, sediments and bacteria that exist in a lot of our municipal reservoirs, are some of the alarming issues that create a need for a water filter in Australia. Bacteria in our water are one of the most common causes of sickness and the common flu.  Water Filters are far more environmentally friendly and economically viable than bottled water. One litre of drinking water from a Pure Water, water filter proves to be much more economical, costing on average 0.9 cents.

Best Rabbit Nail Clippers

We have used these particular rabbit nail clippers for years. They are the easiest to use and the safest around. Always hold the nail to the light before clipping the tips. You have to be able to see the 'quick' or meaty part under the actual nail so you don't cut that! If you do cause bleeding, clamp the nail firmly with your fingers to stop bleeding.

Disaster strikes! Last week I dropped my laptop, smashed the screen and destroyed my hard disk losing all my data including the draft of this month’s newsletter (so it’s a bit shorter than usual). Charity of the Month (continued from July)
Little is known of Candice’s history, she clearly likes being around people so must have lived with a family at some stage but, perhaps through abandonment, she ended up living rough on the streets. When Candice was found she was emaciated, she clearly hadn’t eaten for a long time and was giving all the goodness from her body to keep her kitten alive. Luckily they were both taken to Ingrid’s Haven where she will receive the love and attention and vet care that she will need to regain her strength. Her kitten has found a new home and, when Candice she is strong enough, Ingrid will try to find someone to adopt her too.

Ingrid's Haven is a non-profit, no-kill cat shelter in Victoria. All the cats at Ingrid’s have been rescued from death row at the pound or abusive or neglectful situations. They are cared for, de-sexed and provided with vet care until new loving homes can be found. P roviding care for all the rescued cats is an expensive business so please consider adding a donation towards Candice’s care to your next Cruelty Free Shop order.

Recipe of the Month
Nina’s Delicious Chilli

Ingredients
450g tomatoes, chopped
2 Tbs vegetable oil
2 large onions, chopped
3 large cloves garlic, minced
1 red capsicum, chopped
1 jalapeno chilli, minced
2 cups of Passata (tomato puree)
¼ tsp coriander
1/8 tsp allspice
1 ½ tsp oregano
¼ to ½ tsp chilli powder to taste
1 ½ tsp cumin
2 Tbs fresh coriander (optional)
2 x 400g cans of black beans, drained

Method
- Heat oil, sauté onion, garlic, capsicum and jalapeno in hot oil until onion is soft.
- Add pureed and chopped tomatoes, spices and beans
- Cover and simmer for 30 minutes
- Serve with corn chips, roughly mashed avocado and Tofutti Sour Supreme on the side

Thinking of buying or adopting a rabbit?  If you can't spend most of your day and night with the rabbit then get two!  Rabbits love company.  Having two will not stop them loving you just as much as if they were an 'only rabbit'.   Care needs to be taken when introducing two rabbits for the first time.  The Rabbit Sanctuary can pair up your two rabbits of choice before you take them home.

The Perfect Rabbit Water Dish

This stone dish is perfect for rabbits for either water or food but especially for water because it won't tip over. This gives you certainty that your rabbit won't be without water.  Change your rabbit's water twice daily as they love fresh clean water. Wipe out the dish with a rag or sponge, rinse and refill. Keep the water in the shade or it will get too warm.

Pet Rabbits

If you have pet rabbits or are considering adopting some, please take them to the vet to be desexed.  This way they won't create up to 9 or 10 babies each month and you won't have to worry about what to do with all those rabbits.  Being desexed makes your pet rabbit much quieter and happier to sit still and be petted.  They are less stressed so they are healthier.

Rabbits getting along together

Rabbits don't usually get along together on meeting.  They may bite each other quite severely.

It is best to introduce rabbits to each other slowly, over time.  Two separate areas next to each other can help.

Rabbits under Sydney Harbour Bridge being rescued!

A delightful follow up to this story about the abandoned pet rabbits under the Sydney Harbour Bridge with two wonderful girls trying to gain the attention and compassion of authorities to their plight.  They succeeded!

Two groups working together to save these bunnies!  This is such a big step forward for Australia.  This responsible approach to the problem of the Sydney rabbits in Dawes Point Park is such a better solution than the previous one of poisoning the bunnies. 

Poisoning teaches our children not to respect life whereas this wonderful team effort between the Sydney Harbour Foreshore Authority and the Sydney University Veterinary Teaching Hospital is giving our children and society a very positive message about animal welfare and the value of life. 

By treating these rabbits with respect and care their status is immediately given a boost in our culture.  There value is raised.  Congratulations to the team!  Thank you to Saul and Diane for getting this to happen!

It is Rabbit Awareness Week!

Please help us to raise awareness for rabbits.  Rabbits need a big lift in their status.  They make a wonderful pet and can be just as important as a dog to their owners.  Rabbits can live inside and use a litter tray just like a cat.  They don't kill birds though!  They don't bark like a dog so make a great pet for apartment dwellers.  They do need more than a cage though.  A playpen is a great way to set up your rabbit in the house.  Playpen, litter tray, food dish, water dish, hidey hole like a box or special igloo etc... right in the family room so they can be petted and interact constantly with the family.  No smell if you change the litter tray often.

Welcome to "Chewy", "lopsy", "Groucho" and "Minnie" who arrived at the Rabbit Sanctuary yesterday, 22nd April 2010.  Set in the Australian Bush, the Rabbit Sanctuary was a calming atmosphere for the four little buns when they emerged from their assorted rabbit carry baskets. 

     

They had journeyed long having come from Blacktown in Sydney to Rushforth near Grafton NSW where they were met by the Rabbit Sanctuary team as they met up with the pet transport company who transported them to their new home.

Welcome to "Charlie" and "Rexel" rabbits

Sunday 11/4/10 we welcomed two wonderful new rabbits to The Rabbit Sanctuary.  Great friends and living in a rabbit 'castle' they arrived with their loving owners who had moved up to Queensland from down south and then found out they couldn't keep their beloved pets due to archaic QLD laws.  Their rabbit 'castle' was too big to put in the small car so they dismantled it and then reassembled it on site at the Sanctuary.  It was a great kindness to the rabbits as they felt quite at home in their new surroundings from their familiar 'castle'.  They even brought with them their little play teddy.

Charlie is a rabbit that knows her (yes she is a she!) own mind in an agouti fur coat!  Rexel is soft and gentle soft grey otter colour with a loving nature but full of mischief.

Currently in their castle in the quarantine area responding well to the rabbit slaves that are continually passing and attending to their every need!  Soon they will head for the big rabbit run as desexed females they will be gradually integrated and fit in well.

A big welcome to Charlie and Rexel to their new home in the Australian Bush where time doesn't run out for rabbits... 

Praise for Saule & friends helping rabbits under Harbour Bridge in Sydney

Our praise and encouragement to Saule and her mother and to Diane and husband Wilfried who are helping to save rabbits that have been dumped in "Dave's Park" under the Sydney Harbour Bridge. 

If you would like to help please contact Saule on 0405 005 332.  They need cages and a bird net or fishing net. 

These wonderful people have hire dog cages and are sitting in wait from 10pm to 12 pm nightly coaxing rabbits into the crates with carrots etc. 

We need to educate the public not to dump rabbits in parks or bush.  Recently the government rangers set poison baits in the park killing hundreds of rabbits.  These are the last survivors and are being attacked by dogs with bodies found constantly.

Transport needed for 4 rabbits from Sydney to Grafton! Please spread the word...

We have a request for transport for rabbits from Sydney to The Rabbit Sanctuary in Northern NSW near Grafton.  There are 4 young female mini lops: one fawn, two are black and white and one is harlequin.  They have been in bad circumstances having been left by a young girl with her aged grandmother who kept them in a box in the laundry in a house of barking dogs with no attention or affection.  The aged care worker finally managed to rescue them with the grandmother's consent.  The carer however has been told by her landlord she cannot keep them there.

Please put the word out that we need transport from anyone who is travelling from Sydney or near Sydney to near Grafton / Coffs Harbour area in the near future that would be willing to bring them up.  Money would be provided for petrol.

Jasper booked into the Rabbit Sanctuary today...

Jasper is a big fluffy white rabbit who just booked into the Rabbit Sanctuary.  He is a wonderful bunny, very polite and just getting used to the change in temperature between Armidale and Northern NSW.  
     He is happily munching a carrot and moving joyfully between his big litter tray and his pink fluffy mat in his spacious quarantine apartment. 
     Pretty soon he will be hopping in the big rabbit run with some wonderful friendly bunny pals.

5 new rabbits in over the weekend at the Australian Rabbit Sanctuary "Where time doesn't run out."

This weekend at the Australian Rabbit Sanctuary we happily welcomed 5 gorgeous rabbits.  They are currently in 5 star accommodation in our Quarantine area where they will receive their Calici Virus Vaccination, worming, and special care.  They eagerly await their move to the big "Rabbit Run" set under the gum trees in the Australian Bush.  Some will also have to await desexing.  Here are their details:

• "Skippy" and "Hoppy" - 2 of the biggest white rabbits called "Skippy" and "Hoppy" by the kind folk who found them and surrendered them.  They are very tame and cuddly.  They are both males and are close friends.
• "Flopsy" a gorgeous light grey male rabbit 
• "Mischa" a glamorous white lady with exquisite ginger markings came with "Shelley".
• "Shelley" an amazing little rex rabbit in ginger with tasmanian tiger stripes. 

               Both "Mischa" and "Shelley" were found in someone's garden.

Rabbits are precious.  Don't let them hop away from faulty cages.  Treasure them.  They are loyal little pets who love pats and kind words and lots of carrots!!!  Your rabbits must have shade in the heat and warm enclosures in the cold.  They need secure housing and fencing.  They need fresh water daily and hay! Lots of hay!  Sanctuary rabbits have a base diet of Barastoc Rabbit Pellets with extra vegetables and hay hay hay!

You can litter train your rabbit just like a puppy or kitten.  You can keep your rabbit inside but make sure that you tape up your tv cords and other electrical cords as they love to chew!

Sounds & Sights in the Rabbit Sanctuary

Morning sounds in the Rabbit Sanctuary the sounds are soft and happy.  You can hear cicadas singing in waves, the rustle of gum leaves above, bird songs, rabbits crunching on grass, corn or hay, the occasional "thump" from a rabbit's back leg swiftly slamming down his objection to something which could quite well be the possum in the nearby tree looking on!  

What you see are bunnies hopping, resting, eating, investigating new toys, looking down a freshly dug (soon to be filled with a rock!) rabbit hole, bunnies drinking from the automatic water bowls or the little pond, bunnies binking with the joy of being with other bunnies and human friends that cuddle and care for them constantly.

These are the sounds and sights in the Rabbit Sanctuary set in the Australian Bush in Northern NSW.  The rabbits that live in the Sanctuary have come from Melbourne, Brisbane, the Gold Coast QLD and Tweed Heads.  Some have also come from the local area of South Grafton on the Clarence River NSW.

Rabbits & Winter

With the colder weather coming it is time to think about keeping your rabbit warm and dry on cold days and nights.  At the Rabbit Rescue Sanctuary we are changing summer homes in the Rabbit Run to winter ones.  This includes having an above ground shelf which they have in summer anyway, but in winter it needs to be 'cosy' and dry.  If you are lucky enough to own or be owned by a rabbit, please consider his or her comfort as the colder weather comes along.
