BASKET HANDLING RABBITS

Pet rabbits should be handled by children using a basket with a bit of soft padding in it. Children don't have the strength or dexterity to correctly lift and hold or carry a rabbit. The shallow basket is a tool that enables them to cuddle and pet their rabbit without risking scratches or dropping it.

Parents take note!  If rabbits are picked up incorrectly they will scratch, kick and bite. Read this article to find out how to use cane baskets to make rabbit handling safe for bunnies and children.

Rabbits can be easily trained to hop into a cane basket.  

Here is how:

• First train your rabbit to come for a treat
• Hold a treat near the basket and call the bunny then drop the treat into the basket
• Make sure the basket is steady by pressing down on the handle because if it falls over he will run
• Once the bunny is confident you can lift up the basket and put it down with the bunny in it

By now your bunny should be ok if you lift the basket to a table or chair and interact with him/her

She is housetrained and uses a letter tray. We are looking for an indoor home where she will be part of a family or a single person's pet.  If you are in one of the above areas you can make an appointment to visit us and view the rabbits first hand.  Coming to the Rabbit Sanctuary is an enjoyable experience and we welcome children.  We have a rabbit petting table around which the children and parents can sit and pat tame friendly pet rabbits and learn lots about how to interact with rabbits.  Friday from 3pm to 6pm is our open day. Rabbit Myxomatosis Outbreak in Newcastle Area

Vet confirmed case of myxomatosis in a little pet rabbit called Peanut diagnosed 53 hours ago. Keep your bunnies inside and treat with Advantix for Dogs on back of neck. 0.1ml per kg. Use a one ml syringe to draw up from tube and apply in 4 spots on back of neck.  Advantix for Dogs kills fleas and repels mozzies. Apply fortnightly in danger areas or if outside the house. 

Mow lawns short, ensure no water in yard for mozzies to breed. Spray mozzies and keep pets flea and mite free.

BULLY HAS A STORY TO TELL

BULLY has a story or two to tell. First let us say he is looking for a loving home. 

Bullies mother was rescued from a Tweed Heads building site. We had 24 hours to catch his mother and secure the nest of babies. Thanks to the help of our Foster Carers in Tweed Heads obtaining a rabbit trap and waiting revisiting the site patiently Bully, his mummy bunny and all the baby bunnies were saved. He is now ready to go to a home of his own with his little sister NUMPTY.
