The rabbit should have unlimited access to premium hay in a hay bag or hay rack.

Hay is required by all rabbits. It provides fibre or roughage that they need to digest their food. They should never be without hay. Hanging the hay in a bag or rack ensures that it stays clean and also the 'plucking' of the hay from the holder is similar to how they rabbit picks long grass in the natural environment.

Nutritional Information about high quality premium lucerne hay

Like all Hays and other foods it should be fed according to a rabbit's individual dietary requirements. Buy premium leafy green Lucerne hay. It contains approximately 20% protein and is high in fibre. Lucerne hay contains essential vitamins and minerals for rabbit nutrition.

We use lucerne for rabbits that are underweight, pregnant, feeding babies, baby rabbit to one year, to tempt if appetite is jaded. Rescue rabbits often need building up so Lucerne can be a good first Hay for a rescue rabbit. 

If urine is cloudy or leaves a chalky mark on the floor then add in or change over gradually to a hay that contains less calcium eg Oat, barley, Rhodes grass, Timothy, rye etc. Hays are seasonal so it might mean choosing hays that are in season in your area.

Rabbit Ceramic Food and Water Bowls

Rabbits are very playful pets. They will quickly toss a plastic or tin dish and leave themselves without water or scatter their food everywhere.

We recommend the use of ceramic, straight sided food and water dishes for your pet rabbits.  These are available in pet stores or dollar shops. (Please buy from a pet shop that does NOT sell live animals.  Impulse buying of unweaned tiny baby bunnies is one of the main reasons for abandoned pet rabbits.

These bowls are cheap and last forever (unless dropped by the human). They are easy to clean.

Do not buy rabbit water bottles. They are dangerous. The metal can be sharp and cut the rabbit's tongue. They often fail to work and the rabbit dies of thirst.

Rabbit Calici Virus in Adelaide SA

With the 'accidental' release of a new strain of rabbit calicivirus by Australian government 'scientists' a vet recommends keeping pet rabbits indoors in their homes. He also says the virus can mutate to other species.

Dr Peacock said about a dozen pet rabbits had been killed by the new strain across Adelaide and said a new vaccine was needed to protect them.

But Adelaide vet Dr Andrew Spanner said the available vaccine can provide limited protection against the new strain.

"With the presence of a new virus that we don't have an effective vaccine for and one which is unlikely to come in the near future, we're encouraging all rabbit owners to create an inside environment for their rabbits," he said.

"If we vaccinate every six months, we're still providing reasonable protection.

"There's no way that that protection is as good as it was for the original strain of the virus but there's still some cross-protection."

Basket Handling Rabbits

BASKET HANDLING RABBITS

Pet rabbits should be handled by children using a basket with a bit of soft padding in it. Children don't have the strength or dexterity to correctly lift and hold or carry a rabbit. The shallow basket is a tool that enables them to cuddle and pet their rabbit without risking scratches or dropping it.

Parents take note!  If rabbits are picked up incorrectly they will scratch, kick and bite. Read this article to find out how to use cane baskets to make rabbit handling safe for bunnies and children.

Rabbits can be easily trained to hop into a cane basket.  

Here is how:

• First train your rabbit to come for a treat
• Hold a treat near the basket and call the bunny then drop the treat into the basket
• Make sure the basket is steady by pressing down on the handle because if it falls over he will run
• Once the bunny is confident you can lift up the basket and put it down with the bunny in it

By now your bunny should be ok if you lift the basket to a table or chair and interact with him/her

Rabbit Myxomatosis Outbreak in Newcastle Area

Myxo in Paterson 2421 NSW

Vet confirmed case of myxomatosis in a little pet rabbit called Peanut diagnosed 53 hours ago. Keep your bunnies inside and treat with Advantix for Dogs on back of neck. 0.1ml per kg. Use a one ml syringe to draw up from tube and apply in 4 spots on back of neck.  Advantix for Dogs kills fleas and repels mozzies. Apply fortnightly in danger areas or if outside the house. 

Mow lawns short, ensure no water in yard for mozzies to breed. Spray mozzies and keep pets flea and mite free.
