RABBIT HABITS

RABBIT HABITS
Just a little rabbit care information from the educational tunnel of the Rabbit Rescue Sanctuary Australia...

  • RABBITS GRAZE so don't give them 'meal times'. They must have a hay bag or rack with an unlimited supply of premium top grade fresh and clean hay. They should also have a bowl of fresh premium grade rabbit pellets to eat whenever they feel the need. Change daily as they go stale. Ensure no damp or mouldy pellets are in the bottom of the bowl. Keep it clean.
  • RABBITS DRINK best from a ceramic bowl. Rabbit drinkers such as water bottles with sippers often fail. The ball in the sipper becomes stuck or the pipe has cutting edges that hurt the rabbit's tongue. A heavy ceramic bowl keeps water cool and bunnies can wash their faces too. A ceramic bowl is hard for a rabbit to tip over so don't be tempted to use plastic that they can grab with their teeth and flip over which leaves them without water.
  • RABBITS SLEEP A LOT Rabbits are “crepuscular” (their most active times are early morning and evening and their deepest sleep occurs in the afternoon.) This makes them great pets for working people as they are ready to play when you are home before and after work. They don't make any noise to disturb neighbours while you are away from the house.
  • RABBITS NEED A FRIEND so they can snuggle together when sleeping, play when awake, share food, etc. No human can satisfy a rabbit’s need for constant companionship. Think of all the times you won't be sitting with your rabbit e.g. while shopping, working, visiting, sport, gym, or while you are asleep all night in bed and your bunny sleeps alone.
  • RABBITS DIE IF NOT PROTECTED FROM MOZZIES & FLEAS so keep them protected by keeping them in the home especially during the evening and night. Fly screen, electric and sun powered mosquito zappers and Advantix for Dogs on the back of the neck to kill fleas and repell mosquitoes if applied fortnightly. To apply you need a one ml syringe from the chemist or vet. Draw up the amount from the tube into the syringe. Apply to the back of the neck in a few places. If you put in one place it may 'pool' and just soak up into the fur or burn the skin. The aim is to get it to soak into the skin in a few places at the back of the neck where the bunny can't lick it. The dose rate is 0.1ml per kg so weigh your rabbit first.
Please tell us what you think about our rabbit rescue work.

Cuddle bunny Charlottes Willow

Cuddle bunny Charlotte's Willow is a one in a million pet rabbit who LOVES to be cuddled. Most don't:(

She is just the best pet rabbit who loves being with people and snuggles and cuddles as you see in the photo.

She comes to the new owner with all vet work done like all our rescue rabbits do. She is desexed, vaccinated, microchiped, vet checked, teeth checked, parasite treated. Oh and did we mention cuddly?

OPT TO ADOPT A RABBIT

Opt to adopt a rabbit. Buying a rabbit from a pet shop only encourages backyard breeding which is cruel. Backyard breeders keep rabbits locked in small cages and they are constantly bred for money.

Adopt a Rabbit

Adopt a rabbit and receive advice and ongoing support from The Rabbit Rescue Sanctuary Australia.  We guarantee to take back or swap our rabbits if not suitable at any time during the life of the rabbit.

We believe that there is an owner for every rabbit. Each rabbit we rescue comes along with it's own individual personality and needs, sometimes training requirements. Sometimes a rescue rabbit may have health problems. These are seen to by our veterinarians that are very experienced with rabbit health.

We believe there is an owner suitable for every rescue rabbit

There are those that will only adopt a "perfect" pet rabbit and other people who are willing to take on a "less than perfect" healthwise rabbit and care for him or her.  Sometimes rabbits we rescue come to us with fear and unsociable behaviours. Our Foster Carers and Volunteers work with those bunnies to train them and get them to gain trust in humans. Some people are willing to adopt those rabbits and continue to care for them and help them to overcome fear and train them in better ways of behaving.

RESCUED RABBITS FROM RESEARCH LABORATORY

Two adorable white rabbits shown here in their Foster Carer's home in Lismore. They are clean house rabbits that could live in your bedroom too! They are very tame and friendly and interested in people. They come when called for a treat. They are trained to use a litter tray. They were born in a steel, wire, artificially lit factory that cage breeds rabbits to sell to research laboratories. They were sold to a research laboratory and used to test a rabbit anasethic. They were granted their life at the end of the research and allowed to come to The Rabbit Sanctuary Australia and now they are in a lovely foster care home.  Would you like to adopt them?  If so fill in our application to adopt http://rabbitrescuesanctuary.blogspot.com.au/p/adoption.html and to chat about them ring Kim Cooney on 0416062947

CASHMERE LOPS FOR ADOPTION

Fluffy bunnies for adoption to approved homes. Since the instagram of the English Angora Rabbit we have had lots of calls for Angora rabbits. This pair have the long hair but unlike their taller counterpart they are lops. English Angora and these Cashmere Lops take a lot of time each day with grooming.  We would only allow them to go to a home where the person was wanting to spend at least an hour a day grooming. We also have a Jersey Woolley rabbit at The Rabbit Sanctuary and the Jersey Woolley is a long haired rabbit but the fur is easier to maintain than either the Cashmere or Angora rabbit fur. To enquire please either call Kim Cooney on 0416062947 or fill out our application to adopt a rabbit form. ADOPTION FORM LINK

KEV

Mini Lop Rabbit for Adoption
KEV is a very little mini lop boy who is the perfect house pet. We will be looking for a home that includes him in their family home. We recommend a playpen in the family area of your home equipped with a litter tray, pet tunnel, toys, ceramic food and water bowl, RabbitHouse canvas kennel or other small kennel.

KEV loves to interact with people and would make a great soulmate for a lonely person or loved pet for a gentle child. NB always remember that small children cannot correctly pick up a rabbit. We recommend treat training your bunny to jump into a basket so that the child can pick up the basket rather than the rabbit.

To apply to adopt this rabbit text your name and email to Kim Cooney on 0416062947. We will email you an application form. If your application is approved you will be able to adopt any of our rabbits that suit.

What sex of rabbit should you adopt as a friend for your rabbit?

Should I adopt a girl or boy bunny friend for my rabbit?

It is a great idea to get your bunny a friend. They love to snuggle with another bunny. You are right that a boy girl relationship is the best. They are often threatened by a member of their same sex.  Rabbits from The Rabbit Rescue Sanctuary come to you desexed so you do not need to worry about unwanted pregnancies each month.

Desex your rabbit before adopting a friend
If you already have a rabbit have it desexed before adopting a bunny friend. Desexing stops many unwanted behaviours such as aggression and spraying urine. If you have a male bunny and get a friend the undesexed male will constantly mount the other rabbit and make it very unhappy. It will also spray the other rabbit which will become very stained and smelly.

If you would like to chat about getting a friend for your pet rabbit call Kim Cooney on 0416062947
